Clay Crosse wrote a song that was released in 2000 called More Like You. It’s probably a song that you have never heard before, however it is a song that has played on repeat in my mind throughout my life. The chorus is as follows:
“You are perfect, You are holy
You are faithful, You are true
And I long to live in Your glory
Oh Lord make me more like You
Oh Lord make me more like You”
Those last two lines have become a prayer for me the past 15 years. Many nights before I fall asleep it will be the last sentence that I pray before I lose consciousness. If I had made this motto my theme at its release in 2000, I might have saved myself a few years of pain.
In the past 3 years, there has been a passage of Scripture has played repeatedly in my mind, much like More Like You. The passage is from the book of Philippians, my favorite book in the Bible. Paul says this in chapter 3:10-11 (CSB):
“My goal is to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.”
In chapter 3, Paul shares that his goal is knowing more of Christ. He proclaims to the Philippians that if anyone had a reason to boast about their accomplishments, his achievements were greater. He describes his accumulated knowledge of the Scriptures, his bloodline as a Jew, his excellence in observing the law. Then, he says he counts all those things as loss for the surpassing value of knowing Christ (verse 8).
Paul states very clearly that Christ is the goal. It is not worldly success. It is not to be a good, moral person. It is not about following rules to a religion. The goal is Christ. Our goal should be to know him more with each day that passes. We can never know enough about an infinite God! Every day we can learn more about him. Since studying this passage, that has become my goal. I want to know Christ more and more each day. Then, one day, when I am glorified, I will know Christ perfectly, just as he knows me. Until then, “Oh Lord make me more like you.” Will you pray this with me today?
